Baby On The Way? Protect Your Little One by Using Self Storage

I’m not really a “Royal Family” watcher, but with the arrival of the royal baby getting so much press, it got me thinking about young families and how storage can really come into play.

First of all, let me start by saying that having a child is one of the most amazing experiences in life. I have two, and they are without a doubt, two of the most amazing people in my life. I love them more than my own life.

When our children are babies, keeping them safe is a top priority, and self storage units are a great tool to help you with this goal. How?

Self storage units are easy to come by and they provide a means for storing some of your less than kid friendly items.  You know, that ornate piece of furniture Junior will soon be swinging from like a miniature Tarzan.

Fact is, some furniture just isn’t safe for kids so let’s look at three steps to making your home safer:

  • Begin by taking a look around your home or apartment.  Check for items that aren’t safe for small children.  This includes furniture with sharp edges, unstable and heavy items, and glass furnishings.
  • Next, if you want to keep an item in your home, and can make it safer, do so.  Consider using furniture bumpers for sharp corners and handle locks for dangerous drawers.  Using mats to keep your rugs from sliding is another safeguard that can prevent your tyke from sliding into a piece of furniture.
  • Lastly, you will likely have remaining items that just can’t be made safe.  When you get to this point, you have two choices:  Get rid of those items, or store them.

Its hard sometimes, to part with our expensive or sentimental items. That’s okay, it won’t be for long. Soon enough, your little one will be big enough to safely be around your less safe furniture.

This leaves you with one logical choice:  A cheap self storage unit at Planet Storage 🙂

Investing in the use of a storage unit is a small investment–especially when you consider the return in your child’s safety and your peace of mind.

Finding a self storage unit to fit your needs is easy.  Give us a call at 416-766-1655 and let Planet Storage store your unsafe baby items for a little while 🙂

Miami Heat Players Dunk Their Gear into Self-Storage

It’s not every day that the high-profile athletes are spotted using self storage products on camera–in this case, self-storage boxes.

Fresh off a nail-biting NBA title win, Miami Heat players were recently photographed packing their locker-room belongings into a local Miami Self Storage company’s boxes for safekeeping during the off-season. The Company is named Safeguard (an American based self storage company) and for their marketing department, this was a dream come true.

The Heat roster features three of the highest-paid athletes in the world. LeBron James nets $42 million every year in endorsements alone, making him the NBA’s biggest endorsement star and the world’s fourth highest paid athlete. King James has deals with Samsung, Coca-Cola, Nike and McDonald’s, just to name a few. Dwayne Wade is no slouch himself, pulling in $11.5 million from endorsements. Even Chris Bosh rakes in more than $1 million a year just from endorsement deals.

Now, to be fair, the big three aren’t visible in either photograph, but the photo above clearly features Mike Miller, Shane Battier and Norris Cole, all of whom logged a ton of court time during the NBA Finals. Despite the graininess of the image, most die-hard Heat fans can identify the players in the picture below. For instance, it looks like Juwan Howard is in the light blue.

According to people at Safeguard this timely publicity opportunity was neither planned nor staged. Turns out the equipment director for the Heat actually rents a storage unit from them and when the players asked for boxes at the end of the season, he turned to the place he rents storage from.

Aside from tweets and a Facebook post, Safeguard doesn’t plan to use these images in promotional materials. There are probably all kinds of legal reasons why they can’t, but I don’t think there is anything that says they can’t at least enlarge, frame and hang these images in Safeguard’s corporate office, as well as inside all of the Safeguard storage facilities in the Miami area?

I can guarantee you this…If these pictures were of the Toronto Maple Leafs and they were using Planet Storage stuff, you can bet your last dollar we would be doing everything we could to parlay their popularity into our marketing campaign!!!

Come to think of it. I’m going to talk to my boss right now! There’s gotta be a way we can get them to use Planet Storage!

Using a Storage Locker for your Business

Storage lockers can be used for more than just personal storage.  In fact, business can owners benefit greatly from the low costs that a storage locker presents for their business.  As a business owner, how can you mobilize a storage locker in your own dealings and reap the benefits of this useful asset?

1) Use a locker instead of leasing more real estate – As a growing business, you may soon find yourself bursting at the seams of your current office or business space.   Because many businesses are required to hold on to old files and documents and store them in boxes or old filing cabinets, they find that after a few years, these documents begin to clutter up valuable floor space.  If they need to hire on new staff, that room formerly used as the storage closet may need to be converted to additional office space. And while leasing more office space or building more on-site storage are two good idea’s to deal with office overflow, these options can be extremely costly and unsustainable in the long run if your goal is to continue to grow. Consider sending your overflow of documents to a secure off-site storage locker.  This option can be significantly less costly than on-site storage, and you can free up office space and present a cleaner appearance for customers and clients.

2) Use a locker to store seasonal or over-stock items A storage locker is a great option for retail businesses.  As Summer becomes Fall and so on, the nature of your businesses’ stock will shift accordingly.  But what do you do with all your unsold winter coats (for instance) once the temperature goes up?   Rather than overloading your on-site stockroom, an off-site storage locker is a great alternative.  Whether storing  holiday decorations, seasonal merchandise or overstocked items, a storage  locker is a cheap, accessible and effective way of keeping your stock safe until the following year. By the way, when you bring those coats out next year at 50% off, let me know…ok?

3) Use a locker while your office is renovated Office renovations are also a great time to look into a business storage locker.  The inherent messiness that comes with any construction project can pose significant risks for items around the office.  Documents may accidentally get wet, expensive office furniture may have paint dripped on it and additional obstructions make it hard to maneuver around the office.  By transferring office contents to a storage locker, you keep everything safe from damage and debris during your office renovation.

4) Use a locker for sensitive documents needing added security Sometimes the security of our office or business space is not adequate to ensure the safety of particularly sensitive materials.  In cases like these, an added-security  storage locker may be beneficial for your business. Planet Storage offers its customers both an electronically coded entry and individually alarmed units. All movement is logged within the  computer system so you can see exact times that your locker was accessed and the facility also has 24-hour video  surveillance, security lighting, insurance options and an on-site manager  during business hours.
